Users of WhatsApp now have the option to lock particular chats using a password or biometric authentication according to a new feature introduced by Meta. These talks will also be kept separately and the name and content of the notice, which can only be read after verification, are hidden.
On both Android and iOS devices, it has been possible to lock the entire WhatsApp app using biometrics or a PIN number, but this new capability enables users to further protect particular private messages. The chat-locked messages will therefore stay private even if someone gains access to your phone.
In the blog post, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced about this new privacy feature. Here is what he stated:
Today, we’re announcing Chat Lock on WhatsApp, which lets you protect your most intimate conversations behind one more layer of security…We believe this feature will be great for people who share their phones from time to time with a family member, or in moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra-special chat arrives… You can lock a chat by tapping the name of a one-to-one or group and selecting the lock option. To reveal these chats, slowly pull down on your inbox and enter your password or biometric.
“When a chat is locked in WhatsApp, the thread is removed from the inbox and placed in a secure folder that can only be opened with the device password or a biometric, such as a fingerprint. Additionally, it automatically hides that chat’s content from notifications,” CEO of Meta added.
End-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, encrypted conversation backup, screenshot blocking, and the option to manage who may access the last seen status are just a few of the security and privacy-focused features that WhatsApp already offers. With the most recent version, Meta has improved WhatsApp’s privacy and security features even more.
