Steam “Not Willing To Publish” Any Form Of Games With AI Generated Assets

Valve has been “quietly banning” Steam games that include AI-generated assets.

An unnamed developer said on Reddit that Valve, the company that owns Steam, is “not willing” to accept games from creators who are unable to demonstrate their ownership of the original text or visual assets that are used to train the AI algorithms.

The creator of the game acknowledges in a tweet that has gone viral after being shared on Twitter that a sizable chunk of the game’s components “have some AI involvement,” later adding that they employed Stable Diffusion.

a deadly mistake. In response, a Valve moderator said that Steam was unable to list the game because they had found AI-generated art elements “that appear to be relying on copyrighted material owned by third parties.”

“We cannot ship your game while it contains these AI-generated assets,” the moderator continued, “unless you can affirmatively confirm that you own the rights to all of the IP used in the data set that trained the AI to create the assets in your game.”

It is unclear whether this moderator’s comment represents official Valve policy because the business, in typical taciturn form, has not yet made its viewpoint known to the public.

The cautious language would appear to allow for an internal AI like Blizzard’s that is trained only on assets owned by the creator, but it might still be bad news for the new AI in the Unity game engine.
