Chandrayaan-3’s Lunar Landing Approaches: India Nears Historic Moon Touchdown On August 23rd

Chandrayaan-3, India’s lunar mission, achieved a major milestone on August 20th as its Lander Module (LM) successfully concluded its second and final de-boosting maneuver. The LM has now entered an orbital path with the nearest point to the Moon at 25 km and the farthest at 134 km, as shared by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in their recent update.

In the next phase, the module will undergo internal assessments and await sunrise at the designated lunar landing spot, as indicated by ISRO.

The anticipated date for the lander module to touchdown on the lunar surface is August 23rd. Upon its successful landing, India will proudly become the fourth country to accomplish this remarkable achievement, following the United States, China, and Russia.

The historic landing’s date and time were revealed by ISRO via a tweet that said, “Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the Moon on August 23, 2023, around 18:04 Hrs. IST.”

On August 20, ISRO published a tweet outlining how people may see Chandrayaan-3 successfully complete its lunar mission before the historic day.

ISRO announced the “eagerly anticipated event” would be live-streamed on Wednesday “starting from 17:27 Hrs. IST” in a message on its official website. Several outlets, including the ISRO website, YouTube, ISRO’s Facebook page, and DD National TV channel, will offer live coverage.

“As a result, all schools and educational institutions across the country are invited to take part actively in this historic event,” the ISRO continued. The institutions are requested to vigorously promote this event among their teachers and students and to set up on-site LIVE broadcasts of Chandrayaan-3’s soft landing.

The Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, successfully launched India’s third lunar mission on July 14.
