Micro-Coil Winding and its Medical Application

Treating cancer can be one of the most complicated procedures involving different stages of the treatment. Cryosurgery is one such step in the treatment of cancer in which the carcinogenic cells are taken through a series of freezing and unfreezing. The cells are first frozen at a cold temperature followed by heating of the cell. In the next step, the cells are further frozen to super-freeze the cells and kill all the potent germs within the cell.

In the cryosurgery stage of the cancer treatment, micro-coils are used. Micro-coils are available in different types which can be used as per requirement. Selecting the right type of wire is often the key to the freezing of the cancer cells. Micro-coil winding enhances the effectiveness of cryosurgery.

Different types of micro-coil are as follows:

  • Aluminum coils: Features of the aluminum coils include the following:

o   Light in weight

o   Not pocket-friendly, thus expensive

  • Golden coils: Rarely used. Some of the features that make the gold windings unique are:

o   A good conductor of electricity and heat

o   Used for applications involving skin contact

o   Compatible with the biological cells, hence used for internal applications

o   Expensive.

The above non-copper coils are suitable for medical applications and other sensitive applications.

Procedure for making the micro-coil winding:

The manufacture of the micro-coil winding is different than the other coils since the thickness and the quality of the material become an important parameter. The micro-coils enter within the body, thus they have to be no more than 0.1 mm thick. For fitting the micro-coil into the brain, the wisdom tooth is the path for fitting the micro-coil winding. The appropriate size of the implant is a requirement else it would not fit through the canal near the wisdom tooth.

The difference in shapes:

The difference in micro coil windings with regards to the shapes is the differentiating factor. Since the application of the micro-coil windings in the medical applications and the industrial applications need different sizes, it is often recommended that the micro-coil windings are manufactured in different shapes.

Micro-coils are developed for the main purpose in the industrial usage and medical domain, hence needing excellent precision and customization in the manufacturing process.

Medical application:

During the unfreezing stage in the cryo cancer treatment, the cancerous cell is made to expose to the heat of high temperature. It is only possible due to the tube which is wound around by a micro-coil. The micro-coil, being a good conductor of heat increases the efficiency of heating of the tube; which enhances the defrosting of the cells. This is an important step as it helps in killing the germs within the cells. In the next step, proper freezing of the cells is done, and care is taken to prevent the meta-stasis. Meta-stasis is the spreading of the cancerous cells in the entire body which could aggravate the disease and can lead to harmful consequences.

Micro-coils are also used to point out the location of the tissues as well as the sensors within the body cells. In order to find out the appropriate position within the body cells, micro-coils, when positioned in the right locations and exposed to the magnetic field results in precision. Whether it be reducing the pain within certain locations inside the body or tissue or charging the implant within the body, the micro-coil winding majorly helps in making the medical applications easier.

For the doctors, they help in locating the places which are beyond their sight, with the help of magnetic induction. With the very thin veins present in our body, no other coil except the micro-coil windings can be inserted as it is small in size. With the reduced size of the micro-coil, the insertion in the veins become easier since they are available in variant thickness.

With the help of the magnetic induction, the micro-coils help in improving the quality and efficiency of the performance. What needs to be taken care of is that no two windings should overlap each other.

Industrial purpose:

Coils that are built for the industrial purpose are starkly different from the micro-coils. They are not as small as that used for the medical purpose, but are rather thinner and accommodating as per the size of the body in which they will be inserted. Unlike the coils which are used for hospital purposes, the industrial coils are purchased at a significantly lower price. As much as 1/7th of the price in which the micro-coil windings for medical purposes is purchased, which makes the manufacturing process of them different.

Final notes:

The sterilization process is the most important process and micro-coil winding by renowned manufacturers should only be opted for; especially in cases of medical applications that make them trusted and best.
