Evolution Of Technology: Choosing The Portable Radio

When it comes to technology, the leaps we have made in the last 100 years are really, utterly unfathomable. Chances are, you don’t have much technology in your house that was around in the 1970s. There is one item though, that hasn’t been through a lot of changes and most of us rely on it on a daily basis. The portable radio has had its place in the kitchen since they were invented. Whether you listen to music, soaps, or news, the radio still gives us pretty much everything we need to know. But if you need to buy one, where do you start? Here is how to choose a portable radio based on the article on WiredShopper.Com.

What Is A Portable Radio

As the name suggests, a portable radio is one that you can take with you where ever you go. Some people may not like this, but for those who work outside, like going camping or their car doesn’t have some, they are a good option. Unlike normal radios, these ones either have batteries in them, or they can be charged from a power source and then run alone. Both are good options, but if you don’t have access to a power source to charge one, then a battery-operated one might be better.

AM/FM or DAB?

AM/FM radios are the traditional analog frequency that you can hear turn into white noise when you get out of range. New modern radios are DAB, or digital. This means that you have access to the digital network and pick up more stations than ever before. You can still get AM/FM radios and they are relatively inexpensive. When DAB first came out, they were expensive, but now as technology has become more developed and aged, they are a lot cheaper. If you find yourself using your TV to listen to the radio because your cable has all the radio stations, then it might be worth updating to a DAB.

Types Of Portable Radio

You can now get an array of portable radios. They don’t take up a lot of space like they used to, so if you are packing one away for a camping trip, it won’t take up too much space. You can get a countertop portable radio. These often have rechargeable batteries in them, so make sure it is charged before you take it anywhere. Or you can have the more traditional portable radio, which looks like a small rectangle and has the battery compartment in the back. The only real drawback to portable radios is that their sound quality is a lot less because they don’t have the same power draw and mains radios. But if you are only using it go camping, this won’t be a problem.

How To Choose Your Radio

Before you settle on the purchase of your radio, you might want to consider how you are going to use it first. If it’s going to be truly portable, then you will want an AM/FM connection to make sure that you can get a radio out in the wilderness. If you are just carrying your radio up to your garden whilst you do some gardening, then it might be worth getting a DAB so that you can still listen to all your shows. If sound quality is a big deal for you, then, unfortunately, you’re looking in the wrong place. The sound quality of portable radios is nowhere near as good as mains ones as they simply don’t have the power. They are also far smaller units with fewer components. By evaluating what type of situation, you will be using the radio, you end up with a shortlist of which ones you want to buy that suits your need.

Final Thoughts

Radio technology has remained relatively unchanged in years. It is one of the few technological through backs from the last century that you will still have in your home. If you are in the market for a new radio and think you want to purchase a portable one. Make sure you have thought about when and where you will be using it. DAB isn’t something that is available everywhere and you can still get AM/FM channels. If you are going to be taking your radio camping in the wilderness and still want to be able to listen to some music whilst you cook, select one that is cut out for it. Once you have done that, all you need to do is put in some batteries and away you go.
