Final Fantasy VII Rebirth For Noobs: What To Do First? [Starting Guide]

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a massive game. Just like how 2021’s Final Fantasy VII Remake expanded upon the original 1997 game, this title does the same. It exceeds what to expect from Final Fantasy Remake Part 2 in every way possible.

However, since the world of this game is much more open and bigger than that of Remake, many new players have one question: Where do I go from here now?

This can be a daunting question since you can go anywhere your eyes are pointed to. Like the massive open world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the open world of this game is divided into six distinct regions to explore.

However, only one region is explorable at the beginning after the Prologue mission, which takes three hours to complete!

Therefore, now that you have completed the Prologue and stepped foot into the vast open world of Gaia, you must know what to do first. So, read this post till the end to find out what to do first in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Things To Do First

Once you step foot in the open world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in Chapter 2, there are many things to do first. While most players will simply continue along the main quest line, you might miss out on many major areas if you do so.

Therefore, here are ten things you must do first once you start exploring the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth!

1. Skip Nibelheim (If You Played The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Demo)

Before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was officially released, Square Enix released a short playable game demo. This demo acts as Chapter 1 of the game, which takes you through Cloud’s flashback of FF VII Remake. Therefore, the first part of Chapter 1 is meant to be a recap for both new and old players.

However, it also includes new scenes showing the Massacre of Nibelheim five years ago by Sephiroth. After you play through this demo mission, you must play the final part of Chapter 1, where the real Rebirth starts.

However, you can skip this part if you already played the FF VII Rebirth demo. You can do so from the main menu by clicking Bonus > Check Saved Data.

Moreover, if you skip it, you get additional rewards like:

  • Kupo Charm: Increases the number of extractable resources at a specific rate.
  • Survival Set: A collection of items like Potions and Ethers.

Furthermore, if you have completed Final Fantasy VII: Remake and the INTERmission DLC, you will get two additional items:

  • FF VII Remake: Leviathan Summon Materia
  • INTERmission DLC: Ramuh Summon Materia

Both summonses are powerful and give a nice boost to your journey!

2. Learn The New Combat Mechanics

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth adds some nifty new combat mechanics to make it better than before.

For example, Synergy attacks can dish out unique combos with devastating damage. These attacks remain powerful throughout the game. Therefore, since many Synergy attacks are combos between different party members, try to find out what they are and how to activate them as quickly as possible.

Moreover, we finally get Summon Materia to summon powerful monsters in battle. This new feature wasn’t there in the OG Final Fantasy 7 as well!

Here are some quick combat tips for you:

  • Always use First Strike to initiate combat with enemies and land the first blow!
  • At the start of each battle, use Assess Materia to analyze enemies and find their weaknesses!
  • Learn how to swap characters often to pull off combos and stagger enemies quickly with a barrage of attacks!
  • Only Cloud and Tifa have Dodge Attacks, allowing them to attack immediately after dodging. Therefore, learn how to do so early on!
  • Whenever you stagger an enemy, switch to Tifa since she deals bonus damage to staggered enemies!

3. Follow The Main Story (For Now)

After the end of Chapter 1 in Midgard, Cloud, and his team evade the Shinra troop to reach the Calm Grasslands. This is where Chapter 2 starts, and the open world finally becomes explorable.

However, if you open the world map now, you will find that a grey cloud enshrouds most open-world areas. The world map de-shrouds itself in typical Ubisoft fashion.

Therefore, don’t stray too much from the path. Follow the map marker, leading you to the Chocobo Ranch and Chadley (a very important NPC early on).

4. Seek And Activate Remnawave Towers

When you first reach Chocobo Ranch, you will meet an NPC called Chadley. The first task that he will request you do is climb a Remnawave Tower.

If you have played Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, you know exactly what they are. You must instantly climb these towers and activate them to de-shroud a part of the map and unlock more side quests and markers in the area!

Therefore, after enabling the first tower at the Chocobo Ranch, I recommend heading to the Moogle Emporium. It’s the closest to the ranch and must be the second tower you activate. Moreover, activating towers rewards you with XP and some other items!

5. Learn To Ride Your First Chocobo!

In addition to enabling Remnawave Towers, Chadley will teach you how to ride your favorite flightless bird – the Chocobo!

Here, Chadley will point you to the quest giver, who will redirect you to a specific chocobo on the map. If you get lost in the grasslands, search for footprints of birds on the map.

After you find the Chocobo enjoying his merry meal, you must carefully sneak up behind him and jump on his back! From now on, it’s smooth riding from here since Chocobo riding makes traversing the vast open world fast and enjoyable!

6. Pass All Combat Simulation Tests

Chadley also gives you many VR combat simulation quests. These quests act as tutorials to help you understand the moves and abilities of all your characters.

Therefore, completing them early on is vital since it will make you better at fighting enemies. Moreover, this includes all the playable characters in your party, including Red XIII.

Furthermore, you get lots of XP and Materia to complete these quests. Therefore, there’s no reason to delay these quests any further!

7. Complete All Of Chadley’s Missions

Chadley acts as your tutorial instructor. He will teach you many things that you can do in this game. Moreover, he will also give you various intel-gathering quests. I recommend doing these quests first since completing them gives you Materia (magic spells) to equip your characters with!

Moreover, they also give a lot of XPs, which quickly levels up your party. Since these missions are relatively easy, do them first and unlock new skills rapidly!

8. The Item Transmuter Is More Useful Than You Think

When you first enter Kalm, you will find an inn with a generous innkeeper inside. While you can go to inns to rest your party and heal, you can also talk to this innkeeper.

But why? Because he will give you one of the most important items in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – the Item Transmuter.

When you traverse the open-world regions, you can collect various crafting resources. However, you need the Item Transmuter to craft various consumable items (like Potions) and even armor and weapons later!

To learn more about how to use the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth transmuter, check this wonderful guide below!

However, you are not limited to only a few recipes for success. Therefore, the more items you transmute, the more recipes you can unlock!

9. Visit Mogstool

Mogstool is one of the most easily overlooked places in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PS5. If you have played any of the best Final Fantasy games of all time, you must know what Moogles are.

If you didn’t, here’s a quick tidbit: Moogles are cute, furry, koala-like beings with wings on their back. Since Final Fantasy III, they have been a recurring race appearing in every Final Fantasy game.

Also, did you know that Cloud looks cuter than a Moogle?

In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Mogstool is the home of Moogles. While it appears like a small but tall cottage, it’s actually a portal to the Moogle dimension!

Inside, you can complete many quests that reward you with Moogle medals. Moreover, you can use these medals to buy unique items from the Moogle Emporium inside. Therefore, do not miss this out while starting the game!

10. NEVER Buy Any Weapons

My final recommendation is more of a tip than an objective: DO NOT buy any weapons and armor from the store. Like, never.

Why? You will soon find all weapons, items, and armor in-game by exploring the open world. You will find everything hidden in hidden chests. Therefore, exploring every nook and cranny of the open world map, you will find all the necessary equipment.

Moreover, you can also craft them using the Item Transmuter. Therefore, you don’t have to pay anything to get new equipment in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This isn’t Baldur’s Gate 3.

Conclusion: A Good Start To Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Now that you know what to do first in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it’s time for me to sign off and let you explore and experience this amazing game.

It’s a huge game with many objectives, items to collect, monsters to kill, and flightless birds to ride. Therefore, strap on your gaming chair seatbelts and have fun! Thanks for reading this post!
