We all know about the love and interest that Elon Musk has for the universe. However, as some of you may have already heard, he has taken this fondness a step forward and set up his own Artificial Intelligence firm, xAI.
If you have been looking for an article that could provide you with everything related to this Artificial Intelligence firm, you have reached the right place. That is exactly what I will be focusing on in this article!
Keep reading this blog till the end to learn more about the same…
What Is xAI?
Elon Musk’s recently launched artificial intelligence firm is called xAI. An announcement on the xAI website states that its 12-person team wants to “understand the true nature of the universe.”
According to the venture’s website, xAI is separate from X Corp, the parent company of Twitter, but will “work closely” with Musk’s other businesses, including Twitter and Tesla, which employs AI for its self-driving cars.
Along with trying to comprehend the universe, it appears that xAI will work to create what Musk believes to be a more ethical and secure AI system. Musk has previously signed a letter urging a halt to AI system research, citing security concerns around their unchecked advancement.
What Is The Story Behind xAI?
Musk has long been a vocal supporter of regulation and prudence in the advancement of artificial intelligence. He has frequently voiced his worries about the “civilizational destruction” and potential dangers that unchecked AI development would bring. In response to these worries, xAI has adopted a unique strategy to guarantee its AI systems’ security and ethical usage.
Elon Musk recently presented his strategy for making a safer AI at a Twitter Spaces event. Building a “maximally curious” AI is the focus of xAI’s strategy rather than explicitly encoding morals.
Musk thinks that by helping AI comprehend the fundamental nature of the universe, it will naturally prioritize taking actions that are good for humanity. He declared that humanity is more fascinating than anything else and stressed its inherent importance.
Thus, keeping all this in mind, the billionaire started his new venture!
It is an expansion of Musk’s long-standing interest in artificial intelligence and his return to the sector following his withdrawal of support from OpenAI in 2018. When ChatGPT was first launched in 2015, Musk served as the company’s main financier, taking the stage at an academic conference to announce $1 billion in investment.
According to reports, Musk left OpenAI after co-founder Sam Altman rejected his offer to take over as CEO because he was concerned that the company had fallen behind Google in the development of AI technology. Since then, he has attacked OpenAI on Twitter, notably by criticizing the organization’s change in funding when it converted from a non-profit to a for-profit business with a $30 billion valuation.
It Is Different From Explainable AI (XAI)!
You might be thinking that xAI and XAI are the same thing. BUT NO! They are completely different.
Let me break it down for you!
Explainable Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to applications of methodologies and procedures that enable human experts to comprehend the results of a solution.
Contrast this with the “black box” idea in machine learning, where even the designers are unable to explain how the AI came to a particular conclusion. XAI is a way of putting the social right to information into practice.
In its most basic form, AI requires certain inputs and outputs. When I talk about explainable artificial intelligence, I mean the input factors’ influence on the result.
On the other hand, xAI is a company that Musk created to understand what the universe is. He mentions that this AI is not here to take anything away from humans but to make everything more understandable. He wants to ensure that we truly get the answers that we seek.
So why does it have ‘x’ in its name?
Haven’t you noticed how everything that Musk does or everything he owns (almost) begins or has the letter’ x’ in it?
YES, that’s right!
From his beloved company SpaceX to the name of his son X Æ A-12 Musk, which is often made fun of for being hard to pronounce, everything that holds value to him has the letter X.
According to sources, “the letter X frames where Musk’s ambitions are headed, while paying homage to Musk’s entrepreneurial start.”
So, yeah! There you have it. That is the difference between these two!
Who Are In The Team With Musk?
This is going to be interesting for most people! So, who is on the team with Musk in his new venture?
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is in charge of the xAI team. The team’s people made up of some of the brightest minds, have worked for Google Research, DeepMind, Tesla, OpenAI, Microsoft Research, and the University of Toronto.
This is what the team of xAI has to say on their website for themselves:
“Collectively we contributed some of the most widely used methods in the field, in particular the Adam optimizer, Batch Normalization, Layer Normalization, and the discovery of adversarial examples. We further introduced innovative techniques and analyses such as Transformer-XL, Autoformalization, the Memorizing Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, and μTransfer. We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4.”
Here are the people, along with Musk, who are creating xAI:
- Igor Babuschkin
- Manuel Kroiss
- Yuhuai (Tony) Wu
- Toby Pohlen
- Jimmy Ba
- Christian Szegedy
- Zihang Dai
- Guodong Zhang
- Greg Yang
- Kyle Kosic
- Ross Nordeen
Is xAI Going To Take Over ChatGPT? How Is It Different?
Now, there is one thing that a lot of people are concerned about. And it is the fact that Musk has launched xAI to take over OpenAI’s ChatGPT!
Dan Hendrycks, head of the Center for AI Safety, has been added to the advisory board of xAI by Musk, who served on the board of OpenAI at the time of its founding in 2015.
Members of the Center for AI Safety issued an open letter in May cautioning that the evolution of AI might cause an extinction event. They argued that managing technology ought to be a key focus on a worldwide scale.
Musk, who has criticized ChatGPT and the general approach other companies are taking to generative AI, however, stated that xAI would not seek to program morality into its AI engine explicitly but instead try to make it understand the true nature of the universe to make it safer, according to Reuters.
What Can We Expect From xAI in 2024?
xAI has not revealed much detail about its products and projects, but it has said that it will work closely with Twitter, now called X Corp., and Tesla, as well as other companies “to make progress towards our mission”
Here are some of the possible expectations and predictions for xAI in 2024:
- xAI will continue to work on its mission of “understanding the true nature of the universe” by developing and deploying advanced AI systems that can generate and analyze large amounts of data, such as text, images, videos, and audio. xAI will also leverage its partnership with Twitter, now called X Corp., and Tesla, to access and utilize their data and platforms
- xAI will face more competition and challenges from other AI companies and organizations, such as Meta, Google, OpenAI, and ChatGPT, who are also working on similar or complementary AI projects and products. xAI will have to prove its superiority and uniqueness in the AI market, as well as its safety and ethics in the AI society
- xAI will reveal more details and updates about its products and projects, such as its GPT-4 model, its xAI app, and its xAI Lab. xAI will also announce new collaborations and acquisitions with other companies and institutions, such as SpaceX, Neuralink, and MIT. xAI will also launch new initiatives and events, such as its xAI Prize, its xAI Conference, and its xAI Challenge
These are some of the possible expectations and predictions for xAI in 2024. xAI is a promising and ambitious AI company that has the potential to revolutionize the fields of language, communication, and knowledge. However, xAI also has a lot of uncertainties and risks, and it is not clear whether it will succeed or fail in its AI endeavors.
